Abstract


India and ASEAN have their distinct identities - India is an emerging economy and ASEAN a successful regional grouping of ten independent states of Southeast Asia (ASEAN and Southeast Asia are often understood synonymously). Geographically, both are large in size and population. India’s 1.2 billion people and ASEAN’s 650 million constitute nearly one-third of the global population. With India’s location at the centre of northern Indian Ocean and Southeast Asia straddling both the Pacific and the Indian Oceans, they are strategically placed to command a key role in the geopolitics and geo-economics of the Indo-Pacific.


India and Southeast Asia have had civilizational contacts going back to millennia. Sharing similar historical experience of colonialism, they have today...
