"Anatomy and Physiology", The Lungs

27

The Lungs are one of the few organs that have contact with the outside environment. This makes them prone to being exposed to noxious stimuli, and infection. The lungs are made up of airways, the trachea, right and left bronchi, and further airway divisions, that terminate at the alveoli. Each alveolus is one cell in thickness, and taps into both the venous and arterial systems. These highly sensitive tissues are responsible for the intake (with inspiration) of oxygen, needed to nourish every cell of the body, and the exhalation of waste products, primarily carbon dioxide, which keeps the blood pH in balance. The most toxic influence for the life of your lungs is smoking. So please DON"T SMOKE.
